THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME

W

hen Kerry `82 and Tracy `81 Hafner made their commitment to UW-Stout last year, they knew it would impact students, but the magnitude of that impact was unknown at that time. For the Hafners, some of their fondest memories of UW-Stout revolved around football. Kerry was a standout tight end, inducted into the school Hall of Fame. Tracy and her friends went to every game, piling into her station wagon for road games.

Saturday, Sept. 28th the Blue Devils would secure a 29-21 win over Cal Lutheran. For the student-athletes this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to a destination they may have never experienced, building a deeper bond with their fellow teammates and experiencing the discipline it takes to bring home a victory when you are traveling such a great distance.

They also experienced how challenging travel can be as a hiccup with a connecting flight had them delayed 12 hours in the Las Vegas Airport on their way home. But in true Blue Devil style, the team showed their ability to overcome challenges with patience and positivity. Their attitude and ability to overcome adversity didn’t go unnoticed either, several emails from fellow travelers commenting on the courteous and respectful attitudes of the team were sent to the interim chancellor and athletic director the week following their return.

With an upcoming game at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California, coach Clayt Birmingham knew he had the opportunity to utilize the gift from Kerry and Tracy to give his team an experience they would never forget. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the team and its coaches loaded buses for the Minneapolis airport to begin their trip to California. Seven of the

student-athletes had never flown before. Once arriving in California, they had a day to tour Hollywood Boulevard before arriving at the Santa Monica Pier for a walk-thru practice on the beach, followed by team meetings back at the hotel.

GRATEFUL ALUMNA’S COMMITMENT TO SUPPORT FACULTY

ecky Cranston `64 is proud to say she’s a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her connections with the university, however, go far beyond receiving a diploma. She grew up in north Menomonie, and nine of her relatives have attended UW-Stout, including her father and a sister. “I have Stout floating in my blood,” she said. Becky, a resident of Kent, Ohio, has been away from Menomonie for more than 50 years, but she hasn’t forgotten about her alma mater, and she wants UW-Stout to continue to thrive. That’s why the retired dietetics professor recently committed $1 million as an estate gift, with the possibility of donating some of that gift earlier. This gift is in addition to her other university support in recent years. She has established the Rebecca Gralow Cranston Dietetics Professional Development Fund, an endowed fund to support dietetics faculty. She has also made several significant gifts to the Chancellor’s Fund for Teaching Excellence and Student Success, and this past summer she supported faculty work to help develop an online Master of Science program in dietetics.

“Without faculty you don’t have much of a program,” Becky said, citing the many outstanding professors she had when she was at UW-Stout. “My professors were all focused toward shaping your philosophy of teaching and giving us the technical knowledge and work ethic and skills to succeed in the profession. I want to honor the program and the teachers and the success I’ve had.”

MAKING AN IMPACT FROM WITHIN

I

t was an idea, sparked during a casual conversation among colleagues on campus one afternoon, the desire to come together to give back to our campus and directly impact students. It was this passion and generosity that fueled the creation of the Freshman Legacy Scholarship, dedicated to helping to alleviate the financial burden for students beginning their college careers at UW-Stout. The Freshman Legacy Annual Scholarship was created through recurring monthly gifts via payroll deduction by Amy Luethmers, chief marketing officer, and Gary Schuster, digital media manager for Marketing Communications. The scholarship supports first-year students who have had a family member or members graduate from UW-Stout. “UW-Stout has a strong base of alumni who are passionate about their experiences at the university,” Amy said. “Therefore, we felt this type of legacy program was needed to help provide an additional benefit, in addition to our other freshman scholarship offerings, for their family members who also want to become part of our community.”

This scholarship has caught the attention of many including the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors who provided additional financial support to the scholarship, allowing two students to receive a $500 scholarship in its introductory year, with a goal of increasing the number of scholarships awarded each year.

2018-2019 IN REVIEW REPORT FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR A

s we head into the last year of the Pathways Forward campaign, we continue to make significant strides in providing support to the mission of the university. This past year we ended the fiscal year, 2018-2019, with $7,845,657 in support to the campaign. This amount, added to our previous fundraising efforts within the Pathways Forward campaign, pushed our total campaign results as of June 30, 2019 to $38,626,071. In addition, the total assets of the Stout University Foundation has seen continued growth and has reached a record level for the third year in a row, exceeding $64 million dollars as of June 30, 2019. As a result of market appreciation and gifts to the endowment, the Foundation continues to build its fundraising capacity going into the last year of the campaign. Since arriving at the university in May of 2019, I have been impressed with the level of enthusiasm, interest and support for the Pathways Forward campaign. The success of the Foundation is a result of the hard work of the staff and outstanding leadership of the University, the Stout University Foundation Board and the Pathways Forward Steering Committee. As we continue our work for 2019-2020, we look forward to continued success in our support of the University of Wisconsin-Stout’s mission, students, faculty and staff. Thank you to all our partners who have made this success possible. We are building a strong culture of philanthropy that will serve this university for years to come. You all can be proud, Stout Proud, of the work that you support.
