ENROLLMENT AND RETENTION

The chancellor will join a community that is passionate about UW-Stout’s Polytechnic Mission and its unique place in the landscape of higher education. Rigorous, dynamic academic and experiential programs led by an engaged faculty and staff foster lifelong relationships among students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, and friends. The warm collegiality of the community, the beauty of the campus and of its natural surroundings, and the deep loyalty of the almost 70,000-person alumni base are all sources of enormous pride for the university. Among the most important priorities for the next chancellor are: The chancellor will provide visionary leadership, a strong academic perspective and ambitious long-range strategic planning skills to develop and grow an outstanding academic enterprise in areas that are a natural extension of UW-Stout’s strengths. The chancellor will advance shared strategic goals for the institution by relying on transparent processes, consensus building, and strong internal and external communication skills. The chancellor will also offer an inspiring voice for the vision and will preserve and enhance the traditions and culture of UW-Stout, while being thoughtful and willing to take calculated risks. The chancellor will be able to identify strong talent to build university leadership and will seek innovative and dynamic approaches to tackling the challenges posed by a rapidly changing higher education landscape. articulate the university’s mission and advocate for support for its programs, students and employees. In addition, the chancellor will be UW-Stout’s chief fundraiser and ambassador and will enjoy the recent success of a highly successful campaign and be expected to show an ongoing commitment to building the endowment. In collaboration with faculty, staff and alumni, the chancellor will maintain strong relationships with the existing donor community and will also foster new relationships that will ensure UW-Stout’s continued quality for future generations. UW-Stout is committed to fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student population and offering a welcoming and inclusive living, learning and working environment. The chancellor will play a central role in signaling to the university community the ongoing importance of recruiting and retaining a diverse student body, faculty, and staff. In addition, support systems must be bolstered and sustained to serve the community and the chancellor will need to find innovative ways to increase and support diversity, equity and inclusion, including creating inclusive spaces for students, staff, faculty, and the community as well as infusing ongoing and structured development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty on cultural competence. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The chancellor must have a firm understanding of enrollment management issues and national demographic trends and seek to ensure stabilized enrollments for the university. UW–Stout, on average, draws the majority of its students from Wisconsin and Minnesota that will see a decrease in high school graduates over the next few years. UW-Stout has been a leader in innovative online and distance learning programs and encourage transfer opportunities from a variety of learning programs. The next chancellor will be innovative and entrepreneurial to enrollment management to ensure that programs remain competitive and relevant, have a broad and global reach, and utilize an appropriate variety of modes of curriculum delivery to ensure the greatest potential for success. The chancellor will take a lead in assessing current efforts and developing new strategies in marketing the array of professional and liberal arts programs. The chancellor will also ensure that issues of retention and student success are appropriately considered and that resources for success are readily available to students, staff and faculty.

The chancellor will have a positive, personable, engaging and highly visible presence on campus and in the community and must be prepared by experience and temperament to work closely with the entire community. The chancellor will play an active, engaged, and transparent role among the faculty, staff, and students of the university and will need to represent the entire university successfully and effectively, while working cooperatively to advocate for the university with other chancellors and university administrators. The chancellor will have the capacity to ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, shape discourse, be accessible, and foster the well-established culture and practice of shared governance. Supporting faculty and staff and honoring their central and significant contributions to the university will be crucial. Modeling and encouraging transparent decision- making ensure trust and nourish the spirit of mutual respect. The chancellor will also network successfully with outside constituencies, including local community leaders, legislators, and national policy advisors, as well as staff, faculty, and administrators across the university system to strengthen partnerships, both internal and external. Community and service are integral to UW-Stout’s future growth and continued success. The new chancellor’s ability to increase collaboration and build upon the strong relationships and partnerships within Menomonie and the larger region, as well as the nation and the world, will be critical.

FUNDRAISING AND RESOURCE GENERATION

As with many public institutions, UW–Stout has experienced a decline in the tax-supported share of its operating budget. Therefore, the new chancellor will need to be a strong financial manager and strategist and have the ability to work skillfully, collaboratively, and effectively with state government to
