QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING:

• An understanding of the rapidly changing landscape of how higher education is delivered on campus and online through the use of technology and a vision for ensuring UW-Stout is at the forefront of those developments; • The ability to formulate, articulate and implement a compelling vision for UW-Stout’s future that is consistent with and expands on our current strategic vision and values; • The ability to articulate and promote the many ways that UW-Stout enhances the cultural, intellectual, and economic health of the people of Wisconsin; • Successful senior-level leadership of a complex organization, public or private, with prior leadership roles at a college or university strongly preferred; • A commitment to achieving the sustainability of UW- Stout’s finances, human resources, and environment; • An understanding of the challenges facing an emerging research institution in which dynamic faculty and staff are balancing priorities of strong teaching with an increasing research agenda; • The ability to make strategic and transparent decisions about resources in a challenging fiscal environment; • A deep understanding of and respect for academic values and the traditions of higher education, as well as the ability to grasp and manage the demands of the market and the new forces of technology that have an impact on all universities today;

• A record of success in raising private funds and marshalling resources to build support for various institutional initiatives; • A commitment to achieving excellence through inclusivity, including the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff and student body, to enhance and celebrate cultural awareness, civility, and respect for multiple voices across campus and the community; • A commitment to upholding the UW System’s longstanding policy of shared governance with faculty, staff and students through a collaborative and collegial leadership style; • A commitment to working in close collaboration with student leaders and to advocating for student needs including funding for facility upgrades; • Experience collaborating with business, economic development, non-profit and government groups to advance shared goals; • Servant leader that is willing to get in the trenches, build relationships with students, staff and faculty; • A strong commitment to excellence for undergraduate and graduate education.

UW-Stout seeks a chancellor with the capacity to lead a vibrant institution within a large and dynamic public higher education system.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and inclusiveness and will work closely with faculty, staff and students to ensure the shared governance system operates effectively and collaboratively. The chancellor must be able to work effectively with all campus constituencies and with community leaders and local officials. UW-Stout

The new chancellor must have a keen understanding of the landscape of higher education in Wisconsin, nationally and globally, and must be able to guide UW-Stout in negotiating the opportunities and challenges this landscape presents now and into the future. The chancellor must have an abiding interest in the mission of a student-centered university dedicated to teaching excellence through applied learning and in a technology-rich environment. The next chancellor also must be an advocate of continuing UW-Stout’s commitment to inclusive strategic planning and continuous quality improvement.

a candidate without a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree may be considered if they have comparable credentials and accomplishments that demonstrate a thorough understanding of the institutions of the academy, a deep understanding of the landscape of higher education, a commitment to UW- Stout’s academic mission and an exceptional record of executive leadership.
