UW-STOUT POLYTECHNIC HONORS COLLEGE ORIENTATION GUIDE 2026-2027

Our History: Est. 1994

In 1994, we began as a very small program, intended to bring together students who were seeking more from their time here at Stout Polytechnic. Those students read books together, engaged in lively discussions, took courses together, attended events, and completed projects. Very o en with soup. Fast forward more than 30 years. Currently, more than 400 students participate in the Honors College. We may be larger, but the core experience has not changed.

Our Pillars: Polytechnic Values

CURIOSITY. You wanna know. We wanna know. We want you to know. So let’s go know. Higher education is driven by curiosity. ENGAGEMENT. Learning is active. Living is active. We call it engagement when we get involved in everything the college experience has to o er. COMMUNITY. The Honors College brings together curious and engaged people—including students, faculty, sta , alumni, and community members. We want you to connect, make friends, and network.

Earn Your Stole!

To graduate from the Honors College, you need to be an active participant and collect eight Honors Points . These points are earned through Honors Courses, Honors Projects, Partner Programs, and Prior Learning. You can earn Honors Points throughout your career at Stout Polytechnic, and we will help you plan your own path to Honors graduation. You begin the journey by signing up for Honors Courses today! For each Honors Course you complete, you will earn one Honors Point.

COURSES Our courses let you explore a variety of subjects, alongside other curious Honors students. Honors courses are not harder, but they are more engaging. Our Honors instructors employ creative ways to help you learn. If you participate in Stoutward Bound, the McNair Scholars Program, any study abroad experience (including JUMPSTART: Scotland), or an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), we will credit you with an Honors Point for that experience. We are always looking for additional partnerships. PARTNER PROGRAMS

PROJECTS During your time here, you will complete at least one independent Honors Project. This is your opportunity to pursue almost any question, interest, or activity. Dive deeper. Get more hands on. Do something fun. Stretch yourself. Are you coming to Stout Polytechnic having already earned college credits? You may be eligible for 1 – 3 Prior Learning Points to compensate for Honors courses you won’t need to take. Come chat with our Honors Advisor or Director when you come to campus in the fall. PRIOR LEARNING

03

Be Part of the Community To be an active participant in the Honors College, we ask you to do two things each semester: participate in the Colloquium and attend an Engagement Event . That’s it. We encourage you to attend our various other events and activities, study and socialize in the Honors Lounge, live in the Honors Living Community, and be a part of our vibrant Honors community. Being an active participant will help you succeed and flourish at Stout Polytechnic. It will also make you eligible for priority registration. COLLOQUIUM

Each semester we gather for a lively discussion about our common book. You’ll eat soup, converse with friends, meet other curious people, and tackle subjects you might not have even thought about before. ENGAGEMENT Every semester we nudge you to explore something new. Choose at least one interesting activity from our Engagement Events calendar, which may include film screenings, plays, outdoor adventures, service projects, lectures, and other events.
