225 Social Networks of University Students with Mental Illness Future research should also be done to explore a larger sample, including more severe mental illnesses and their social networks as well. Longitudinal of studies of different casual friends, “best” friends, or friends with other men tal illnesses of social networks could be looked at as well to try and consider what kind of support is best for different types of mental illness. This study finds that social networks are important to everyone, but particularly so for helping those with mental illness. However, this study also suggests that research on patterns of connectedness in social networks for people with mental illness is important to tease out, particularly why those networks look the way they do.
