> Hello Class of 2028!

A welcome message from your Stout Student Association President.

Hello! My name is Alex Cluphf, and I am the President of the Stout Student Association – your student government on campus. I’d like to extend you a warm welcome to University of Wisconsin Stout! Going to college can seem a little daunting, and even overwhelming at times. Just know that everyone here wants to see you succeed and help in any way we can. There are also a number of services on campus to give you the resources you need to succeed. A couple important ones I’ll mention are the Student Counseling Center and Student Health Services. The Student Counseling Center offers mental health counseling for free to Stout students - it is an excellent resource and one that I can personally recommend. We also have Student Health Services, which is an on campus clinic that offers free and low-cost healthcare services to students. At UW-Stout, we’re also proud to be home to a plethora of student organizations, teams, activities,

and clubs – over 150 of them, in fact. I hope you’ll take some time and find something that sounds interesting to you – and if you don’t see something you can always start your own organization! Attending university is, for most, a once-in-a lifetime experience, and I encourage you to take your time and get the most out of your time at UW-Stout. One of the best parts about UW Stout is that you have a voice on campus. The Stout Student Association, your student government, is made up of students just like you who represent your interests to campus officials and advocate for Stout students in the local, state, and federal governments. If you are interested in gaining leadership experience by becoming a representative yourself, or have an idea, question, or concern, feel free to contact me personally at ssapresident@ uwstout.edu or check out the SSA website at ssa.uwstout.edu.

WE WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU > Sharing your preferences lets other know the ideal living arrangement for you.

We’ll guide you through this process on the Gateway. Be sure to read and follow instructions carefully.

Complete your preferences yourself. It is ok to have someone help you, but make sure you’re selecting preferences that reflect your interests.

We strive to meet your desired preferences. But, it’s not possible to meet every one of them.

Roommates need to mutually list each other when completing preferences. If you don’t have a specific person to room with, we’ll pair you with someone based on the preferences you submitted. There is a section that asks about medical dietary needs. We encourage you to speak to the University Dining Service full time Registered Dietitian. → ROOMMATE GROUPS

12

FINDING A ROOMMATE JUST GOT EASIER! > Residents can search for a roommate or create roommate groups to prioritize compatibility.

Roommate groups allow you to organize desired roommates. They also allow you to assign roommates when you select your room, or allows a current student to pull you into their space. This can increase the likelihood of being assigned together if you do not choose a room. However, this does not guarantee you will be roommates.* *Please note: at semester it is more difficult to find a fully open room for two incoming students to be roommates. What does a roommate group do? You can start forming a group any time after completing your preferences. It is best to be in a roommate group PRIOR to room selection starting. If you are not in a group or your group disbands before room selection, you will still be able to select a room and will be able to see your assigned roommate. At what point should I be in a group?

→ TRANSITIONING

LIFE @ STOUT

13

Know your roommate Based on the some of your answers, we’ll ask you some Yes or No questions to a create your roommate profile that other students can review when looking for a roommate. You can mark criteria as Critical if there’s not a lot of wiggle room but use that sparingly to keep your options open! We’ll ask questions about: smoking and alcohol preferences, your feelings on guests or significant others in the room, special interests, like video games, sports, travel, or community service, and views on inclusion and diversity or willingness to discuss differences. MAKING THE TRANSITION > Whether you’re transferring from another university or starting your college career Spring Semester, we look forward to you joining our community.

Know Yourself It may sound odd, but if you’ve never lived in close quarters with someone, you may have never considered how personality or lifestyle choices can influence relationships. Are you more of an introvert or extrovert? How would you rate your cleanliness? (Be honest!) When do you prefer to wake up and go to bed? Do you like having people over a lot or keep things quiet to study?

Start the conversation After you have a roommate, be sure to connect with them and learn more about them before you move in. It paves the way for clear communication throughout the year! What roommate preferences answers intrigued you? Who’s bringing what?! What are you both looking for in a roommate? Talk on the phone or meet up, if possible. Relying on texting or posts from social media can lead to miscommunication.

You don’t have to be best friends to be great roommates. Roommates that mutually respect one another’s belongings, space, and preferences tend to have a great living experience even if they don’t share the same interests or social circles!

→ SMART + HEALTHY

14

YOU DON’T NEED TO DRINK TO FIT IN In a Fall 2022 anonymous and self-reported survey of on-campus residents, 75% of first-year students and 65% of sophomores indicated that they don’t consume alcohol. Drinking is sometimes thought of as common for college student social life. However, trends show that fewer students chose to drink at all or if they do, they chose to drink less. UW-Stout takes an assertive and caring approach to underage drinking and alcohol use. While there are financial consequences to violating policies, we take an educational approach to correcting behaviors and creating successful habits.

Students have multiple ways to pay for college. Scholarships, grants, student employment, loans, waivers, and other financial aid options are available to students while enrolled at Stout. Start exploring options early as scholarship award criterion and application deadlines vary. We strongly encourage you to apply for financial aid, even if you think you may not be eligible. A DINING PLAN DESIGNED FOR RESIDENTS > Select the Baseline dining plan that best meets your needs.

DINING DOLLARS

Dining Dollars Plan were designed by University Dining Service (UDS) for students living in the residence halls. It provides contracted meal service at two cafeteria locations on campus. The university requires all residence hall students participate in a Baseline Plan with four plans to choose from. Plans are issued on a per semester basis.

Dining plans are broken into two parts:

Board Fee This is a per semester cost paid by each student living in the residence halls. It is used to meet non-food operating costs of cafeterias. These costs include such things as: mortgage/rent, utilities, labor, supplies, maintenance, insurance and administrative overhead. The cafeteria locations are maintained to offer each resident the opportunity to obtain high-quality, nutritious, traditional meals.

Dining Funds These are the initial funds deposited in your Baseline Plan account and are accessed with your Stout BlueCard. The funds are used to make purchases of food at any UDS operation on campus. Baseline Plan participants pay only food cost for cafeteria meals at either Commons or North Point cafeteria locations but will pay full cash price at other dining locations.

When choosing your plan, select one closest to your estimated needs without exceeding them. Additional funds can be deposited throughout the semester with unused funds carrying over so you never lose them. When choosing a plan, consider how often you will eat in the cafeteria (food cost only) and other dining locations where you pay full price. Where you dine is the most important factor besides frequency. Remember, dining in the cafeteria is the most economical use of the dining plan.

CHOOSING YOUR PLAN

Which plan is best for you? Use the calculator below to help select the plan that comes closest to meeting your needs.

Consider the following data when estimating usage: Only 10% of hall residents choose to eat breakfast.

Plan 5 is recommended for first-year students until their dining habits are determined. Plan 5 would approximately cover all lunch and dinners in the cafeteria during a semester. It would also provide around half the breakfast meal periods in the cafeterias. On average, 10% of students eat breakfast making this plan a great starting option. Keep in mind, unused dining funds roll forward.

Meet the Designer! Howdy, my name’s Zaria, and I’m a member of the Housing Design Team. I’m a senior here at Stout, majoring in Graphic Design Communications, with a minor in Metals and Jewlery. Hopefully this book answered at least a few of your questions about our school, and it’s made your next steps have been made clear. If not, reach out and we’ll get you sorted quick and easy. Oh, and it goes without saying, Stout’s lucky to have you. When you get here, meet some friends, make some memories, and devour every lesson you get. Be safe, see you soon.
