Professor’s research contributed to 1960s space race Alta Belle Kemp, a former UW-Stout professor who had a distinguished career in dietetics, died Jan. 29, 2021, in Temple, Texas, at the age of 101. Kemp led a NASA-funded study in 1964-65 on the health impacts of space travel while she was a Ph.D. student at Texas Women’s University. The research involved seven Gemini and Apollo missions as the U.S. raced to become the first to land a human on the moon. She taught at UW-Stout for a decade beginning in 1966 and conducted important research on the nutritional value of protein-rich soybeans at a time when planting them wasn’t as common as today. “She was very much a pioneer in women’s studies,” said her son, Bill Kemp, a 1976 UW- Stout alum, noting her five degrees despite having grown up during the Great Depression. “Of all her experiences, she just loved Stout.”
