NEW TEAM + A YEAR OF HIGHLIGHTS A new year of athletics already is underway at UW-Stout, highlighted this fall by the homecoming football game held in October. However, Blue Devil fans aren’t forgetting All-American performances from 2021-22, the first uninterrupted year of athletics since the pandemic began in 2020. Lacrosse: Athletics announced in fall 2021 that women’s lacrosse would be added, bringing the number of university teams to 20. Jordyn Merkel was named head coach. The team will begin play in spring 2023. Basketball: The women’s team, 13-11, was the No. 2 seed in theWIAC tournament, hosting a second-round game for the first time since 2006 07. The men hosted their first WIAC tournament game since 2012-13, finishing the year 16-9. Lovell Williams was first teamAll-WIAC. Gymnastics: Senior Mikala Bugge won an NCGAindividual national championship on the vault and a total of five All-American honors. Effie Ferguson, balance beam, also was All-American. Track and Field: Senior Kevin Ruechel won a national indoor cham pionship in the shot put, finished second nationally in the outdoor meet, third in the discus. Hannah Zastrow was runner-up nationally in the indoor 60-meter hurdles. Four other Blue Devils wereAll-Americans. Baseball: Senior shortstop Charlie Szykowny earned national honors from two organizations, Stout’s first All-American in baseball since 2007, after setting school records for home runs (18) and RBIs (55). The Blue Devils were 21-19. Softball: The Blue Devils doubled their wins, 12, from the previous season under first-year coach Chris Iliopoulos. Volleyball: The Blue Devils posted a 14-13 record in the final season for Coach Mandy Trautmann. Ben Staupe took over as coach in the spring. Golf: Abbey Filipiak was medalist at the WIAC meet as the Blue Devils finished fourth. Esports: The second-year varsity programmoved into its own esports space in Heritage Hall. The Rocket League team finished 26-10 and was second in the state meet. The program added two teams and is in five leagues for 2022-23.
