Recreation Complex Renovation

The Recreation Complex Renovation project plan.

Recreation Complex Renovation

Student success is at the heart of UW-Stout’s mission, and welcoming, modern, and accessible recreation and athletics facilities are central to that goal. An expanded and renovated recreation complex at the Sports and Fitness Center will enhance student health and wellness while enriching the experience of Stout students and student-athletes. This renovation will help UW-Stout address current recreational, cardio, and fitness space needs identified under National Intramural and Sports Recreation Association (NIRSA) standards. UW-Stout students have championed this project from the beginning—first voting to financially support this project in April 2019 and reaffirming their support in March 2022. Invested in Student Health, Wellness & Fitness

Capital Budget Request The Recreation Complex Renovation project is Stout’s #1 capital project. In August 2024, the UW System Board of Regents affirmed their support of the project by ranking it #8 on the major projects request list. UW-Stout is seeking bonding authority in the 2025-27 capital budget. If approved, the Recreation Complex Renovation will be completed without the use of taxpayer dollars and funded entirely through donor support and student-approved fees.

Project Budget: $31.7M Total Space: 39,408 sq. . • New: 11,750 sq. . • Renovated: 27,658 sq. .

Renovation Features • Improved entrance and new welcome and community space, featuring lobby seating and limited retail. • Renovation of decommissioned pool area into multiuse gymnasium. • Fitness space addition, including strength training, cardio, and fitness studio space. • Relocation of athletic weight room to current fitness center; conversion of existing space into multiuse studios and instructional spaces. • Updated locker rooms that address shower quality and lack of privacy, increase accessible options, and provide additional shared space for sporting events. • Elimination of fitness center student membership fees. (Facility operations will be sustained through segregated fees.)

Renovation Plan The renovation provides essential updates to the 60-year old building, including a new entrance and addition to increase open recreational fitness space for cardio and strength training for a variety of recreational users. A multi-use gym will provide a facility for students and community members to participate in activities ranging from open recreational use to club sports and intramural competitions. Locating the athletics weight room in what is now the fitness center will free up its current location for three multiuse studio gyms. This will ensure students are able to participate in group fitness classes and additional hands-on learning opportunities. Locker rooms and restrooms will be expanded and updated to improve convenience, privacy, and accessibility.

Community Partnerships The impact of the Recreation Complex Renovation reaches far beyond UW-Stout’s campus and impacts a wide range of academic programs and partners. From youth summer camps to industry project learning, the project serves area schools, community partners and private industry.
