Spring/Summer 2024 School of Education

Message from the Director

Spring commencement is always exciting and this year was a little extra special. We celebrated the students who started as freshmen in Fall 2020 during the pandemic and completed their degree over the past four years. They persevered through that unprecedented time and adapted in order to achieve their goal of a bachelor’s degree. This year’s graduates will bring all that they have learned about perseverance and resilience to their classrooms and the students they work with. Among the spring graduates, 48 students completed the requirements to become licensed as PK-12 teachers, 6 completed the school counseling program, and 11 completed the school psychology program. In addition, 8 students completed the B.S. Career, Technical Education and Training program prepared to teach in 2-year technical or community colleges; 31 students graduated with an M.S in Education; 12 students graduated with an M.S. in Career and Technical Education; and 8 students earned their Ed.D. in Career and Technical Education Leadership. The end of the academic year is also a time when we celebrate other accomplishments and excellence in our students, faculty, and staff. Students in the Early Childhood Education and Family and Consumer Science Education programs received campus-wide awards for leadership and service, and Barb Bauer, Technology Education Program Director, received an award from the Wisconsin Technology Education Association. In addition, an alumnus of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education program is being recognized at a national conference this summer as a national teacher of the year finalist.

And one of our Ed.D. alumni received the Dissertation of the Year Award from an organization of which UW-Stout is a member along with universities from across the U.S. that have graduate programs in workforce education. You can read more about these awards in this newsletter. Looking ahead, this summer UW-Stout is again offering Teaching in a Fab Lab workshops and we have added two new options: Introduction to FabLab Equipment and Developing Curriculum. Information is available online. These workshops are intended to provide any educator the opportunity to explore how to use the FabLab and integrate it into their curriculum. Also, as of July 1 the new administrative rule for student teaching will go into effect. After collecting input from many stakeholders, the decision was made that Fall 2024 student teachers will follow the university calendar. The dates have been shared with student teachers and school district staff where the students have been placed. If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or Josh Bowe, Clinical Education Experiences Coordinator (bowejo@uwstout.edu). And finally, please mark your calendars for the following Fall 2024 events: Teacher Appreciation Event, September 21 at UW-Stout home football game vs. Univ. of Northwestern (MN) – more information forthcoming Fall Teach Day, Wednesday, November 13 – This event is for students in Grades 9-12 interested in becoming a teacher. Have an enjoyable and relaxing summer!

Students’ Experiential Learning

Student Teacher Seminars To help student teachers be prepared for the job search process, we provide professional development sessions related to the job search. In February, student teachers learned from a panel of school administrators about their expectations during the job application and hiring process. This

was followed by sessions with UW Stout’s Career Services staff to learn how to prepare for interviews. During the April seminar, student teachers participated in mock interviews with area school district administrators. Exploring Innovation & Entrepreneurship Marketing and Business Education student Mikayla Obsuzt was a member of the cross-disciplinary Safe Skin team that participated in UW-Stout’s Ideation Jam and qualified for the WiSys Big Idea Tournament held in LaCrosse April 19, 2024. Ideation Jam allows UW-Stout students to develop an innovative idea and pitch it to judges who are experts in business. The statewide WiSys Big Idea Tournament is an event for students at all UW campuses to present their ideas and winners earn funds to use as seed money for their winning idea. Three Family and Consumer Science Education students - Anna Johnson, Hannah Timm, and Josie Finocchiaro - were recipients of the Samuel E. Wood Medallion Award. This is the highest award given to seniors who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, and contributions to student activities. Alumni Honors Emily Larson, a 2003 Family and Consumer Sciences Education graduate, was recognized as an American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences National Teacher of the Year Merit Finalist. This award recognizes “exemplary teachers who utilize cutting edge methods, techniques, and activities to provide stimulus and visibility to family and consumer sciences (FCS) in elementary and secondary education.” Emily teaches at Amery High School and has been able to turn her classroom into a state-of-the-art FCS suite that includes a textile fabrication lab and commercial culinary facility. Emily also developed a FCS Leadership Academy which incorporates service learning, youth centered leadership, and post-secondary options into the FCS program.
