BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PLASTICS ENGINEERING
PROGRAM
YOU CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE OF PLASTICS. LEARN HOW TO LEAD THE WAY. University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Bachelor of Science in Plastics Engineering prepares you for a career in the research, design, manufacturing, testing and management of new and existing plastics products. You will receive specialized training as a plastics engineer, learning core engineering principles and focusing on plastics material science, design and processing.
PLASTICS ENGINEERING LAB Your lab experiences will also focus on: • Material science/characterization • Extrusion • Injection molding • Thermoforming • 3D printing • Product design • Process simulation The range of characterization and processing equipment in the plastics engineering lab makes it one of the elite labs in the nation.
THE FUTURE IS IN PLASTICS.
PLASTICS ARE ALL AROUND US Plastics are used in a multitude of applications including: consumer packaging, automotive parts, drinking water purification, and advanced medicines and medical devices to name a few. Every day, plastics add comfort, convenience, and safety to our lives and our world in many ways that we take for granted. Advances in plastics for packaging have helped protect and preserve goods while reducing weight in transportation, which saves fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. From defibrillators and automotive interiors to aerospace components and recreational vehicles/gears, durable, lightweight and affordable plastics have transformed our lives. PLASTICS IMPROVE OUR LIVES BY: • Advancing medical devices like implants or prosthetics, and bioplastics for regenerative medicine • Developing lightweight automotive components, making vehicles more fuel-efficient • Manufacturing new construction materials like plastic spray insulation to reduce energy usage in homes • Researching new plastics materials to make clothing, packaging and sporting equipment more durable “I chose to attend UW-Stout because it has an amazing plastics engineering lab and a polytechnic approach. I really like doing hands-on activities, and I learn the most when I’m in the lab. Every plastics engineering class has a lab component, which forces you to actually use the equipment and practice technical writing with lab reports. Those were most important for me because I wanted to learn something that could be applied in my career.” LARYSSA MEYER UW-Stout Plastics Engineering student
CAREER EMPLOYMENT
Plastics engineers are in high demand. Internships or co-op jobs will prepare you to tackle global materials and processing issues. Your hands-on preparation to work with plastics will give you a competitive edge, so you can help bring the region's plastics industries to the forefront of the field in the design, development, and manufacturing of plastic products.
CAREER PATH: • Automation Technology and Applications • Engineering Management • Technical Sale • Product Design and Development • Material Development • Process/Manufacturing Engineer • Equipment Design SCHOLARSHIPS
Our industry partners invest in your success. These partners provide a multitude of scholarship opportunities for all levels of Plastics Engineering students. Selective scholarships are available exclusively for first and second year students with the majority of students qualifying for an award. The Charllotte V. Nehring and Dr. Robert J. Janeczko Endowed Scholarship is our program’s largest and longest-standing scholarship. The Janeczko Scholarship provides two, renewable, $7,500 annual scholarships to help pay for your education.
“For the longest time, I knew I wanted to be an engineer but wasn't sure what kind of engineer I wanted to be. I enjoyed physics, math and chemistry in high school. After talking with a plastics engineer, I went in the direction of the Plastics Engineering program at UW-Stout. After taking the Introduction to Plastics course, I was hooked.”
