INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW

Show up Prepared • Research the person you are speaking with and their background to gain a good understanding of their expertise and career trajectory. Use resources such as LinkedIn, their company’s website, social media, etc. • Create a list of thoughtful and relevant questions that you would like to ask during the interview. • Research the industry or field you’re interested in, so you can have a meaningful conversation and demonstrate your knowledge and enthusiasm. • Dress professionally , arrive on time, and bring a notebook or device to take notes during the interview. • Arrive 10 minutes early and test your technology if its virtual. Being late is not acceptable. • Being well-prepared shows your respect for the interviewee’s time and allows you to make the most of the opportunity. Questions to Ask 1. Can you tell me about your career journey and how you got to where you are today? 2. What do you find most rewarding and challenging about your work in this industry? 3. What skills or qualities do you believe are essential for success in this field? 4. Are there any particular trends or changes happening in the industry that aspiring professionals should be aware of? 5. Can you provide insights into the day-to-day responsibilities and tasks typically involved in this type of role? 6. How do you see this industry evolving in the future, and what opportunities or challenges do you anticipate? 7. Are there any specific certifications, courses, or experiences that you would recommend for someone looking to enter this field? 8. What advice do you have for someone starting their career in this industry? 9. Could you share any recommendations for networking or connecting with other professionals in this field? 10. Are there any additional resources or organizations you would suggest for further learning or development in this industry? Remember to tailor these questions to the specific interviewee and their expertise to ensure a more engaging and personalized conversation. Thank them for their time! Be sure to thank the person you interviewed for their time and advice. Both an email or a handwritten note is appropriate. Make sure you send your thank you withing two days. Also consideting mentioning something you found valuable from that conversation.

If you’re interested in gathering more information at a later time, you’ll have their information in your back pocket. Use the LinkedIn “Find Alumni” Tool Alumni get it. They were once in your shoes. It’s strategic to connect with recent Stout alum with a similar major that can provide you with “tips and tricks” that will enable you to make smart career decisions as a student. Requesting A Meeting Sample Email Message “Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a student at UW-Stout. I received your name from ________. I am in the process of making some decisions about _______ (i.e. Packaging, Computer Engineering, Graphic Design). I have an interest in ______ and would like to discuss your experiences, advice, and knowledge of ______. If you are available in the near future, please let me know what works for you!” An informational interview is a focused conversation with a professional from your desired industry to gain information about an industry or career and to build a network
