2021 Scholarship Reception Booklet

Tom Onken Memorial Endowed Scholarship Tom grew up in Neenah, Wis. He was a graduate of Neenah High School and a 1982 UW-Stout graduate with a degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. Near the end of his senior year, Tom was recruited by Marriott International. His first position was as assistant housekeeping manager in Kansas City, Mo. During his 38-year career with Marriott, Tom held a variety of positions before moving into Marriott leadership. From 2007-2018, Tom was senior vice president, lodging development of the Eastern region before being promoted to chief franchising officer for the U.S. As CFO, he was responsible for continuing to build and maintain strong relationships with franchisees in over 4,000 hotels. Tom passed away in January 2021. Tom will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor, smart aleck jokes, and entertaining stories. He spoke often of the valuable lessons he learned at UW- Stout, and the lifelong friendships he made. Tom’s family established this memorial scholarship to assist hard-working hospitality students to become the industry’s leaders and mentors of the future. The annual award is $2,000. Makayla Styer Tim Pabich Scholarship The Tim Pabich Scholarship was established to support students enrolled in the undergraduate construction program. As an alumnus and the founder of Royal Construction in Eau Claire, Wis., Tim employed dozens of students and graduates of UW-Stout’s construction program. Today, several members of Royal Construction’s leadership team are UW-Stout graduates. The Tim Pabich Scholarship aims to support the education of tomorrow’s construction leaders. The annual award is $1,000. Derek Johnson Packaging Advisory Board Annual Scholarship The Packaging Advisory Committee scholarship was created and funded by Advisory Committee members including Stout packaging alumni with a passion for supporting students pursuing a career in packaging. The Packaging Advisory Committee advocates on behalf of the program and advises on industry trends and needs. The Packaging Advisory Committee is seeking to support an incoming freshman or transfer student with a minimum 3.0 GPA enrolled in the packaging program to further their engagement in one of UW-Stout’s top performing programs.
