A Coach Above the Barr One can hardly mention athletics in New Richmond without acknowledging Stan Barr (’68 ), who was admired and respected for his leadership by athletes and fellow coaches across the state. Barr began his career at New Richmond High School in 1965. He taught physical education and coached football, cross country, wrestling, and track and field, leading the boys track team to the state championship in 1982. After earning his master’s from UW-Stout, he served as a guidance counselor and later as athletics director. Barr retired in 1991, was inducted into the Wisconsin Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007 and was part of the inaugural class of New Richmond’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. Barr, age 91, died peacefully on March 10. ‘Lived a Little’ to Live and Give a Lot “Live a little” was Charlie Mowbray’s (’51, ’57) favorite bit of advice, and he lived a lot in his nearly 98 years, encouraging others to take a chance, be curious, explore new places or volunteer to help others. After fighting in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945 and receiving the Purple Heart, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s in education at UW-Stout, where he met his wife, Carolyn Blain Mowbray (’51) . Charlie taught industrial arts for 14 years, and Carolyn, a family and consumer educational services alum, taught home economics before they started their family. Charlie joined Blain Supply Inc. in Janesville in 1965, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. Over their lives, the Mowbray’s Carolyn Blain Mowbray Endowed Scholarship, which has awarded nearly $740,000 to 50 students. Charlie passed away on Jan. 13, 2024, and Carolyn passed on Jan. 3, 2023. gave $3.5M to UW-Stout, including the Charles and

Courtney “Court” Nystuen , 86, of Northfield, Minn., passed away on Aug. 15, 2023, at Parkview East, Northfield Retirement Community. Court earned his master's in architecture from the University of Minnesota and served as professor of architecture at UW-Stout for 31 years, retiring in 1998. Robert J. Philumalee , 71, of Madison, passed away on Aug. 22, 2023, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Rob worked for the State of Wisconsin for more than 25 years and was proud of what he did. He retired as an operator with UW-Stout's Power Plant in 2010. Sandra “Sandy” White , 69, of Menomonie passed away March 6, 2024. Sandy worked at UW Stout beginning in 1990, retiring in 2020 with Stout Online as an outreach program manager III. She served on numerous UW-Stout committees, the Menomonie City Council and with many city, county and local organizations. Driving Others to Be Their Best Strasser Engineered His Dream Jim Strasser (’00) was determined to follow his dreams into motor sports. As a child, Strasser’s family traveled to motocross events in central Wisconsin, and he developed a close-knit circle of friends in the racing community. After earning his manufacturing engineering degree from UW-Stout, Strasser moved to Mooresville, N.C., to work for Joe Gibbs Racing. He was part of the winning team that led Bobby Labonte to win the Winston Cup Series in 2000. He held a patent (U.S. 7,083,514 B1) for an air-filtration system for vehicle operators, granted in 2006. Strasser, of Stevens Point, passed away on April 12, at the age of 58.

William “Bill” O’Neill , Jan. 12, 2024, Menomonie Helen Smalley, March 30, 2024, Menomonie Faculty & Staff Passings Kristine Ann Binkley, 68, of Menomonie, died peacefully at her home on April 27, 2024, after her short courageous battle with brain cancer. She worked at UW-Stout for 30 years, retiring as a data reporting specialist for the Discovery Center in 2022. Ted Hendzel Jr. , 74, of Eau Claire, passed away on Feb. 16, 2024. Ted served as director of UW-Stout's Physical Plant for more than 19 years, from 1991 to 2010. Robert “Bob” Johnson , 77, of Menomonie, passed away on Jan. 18, 2024, at home after a heroic two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Following a 37-year career at UW-Stout, Bob retired in 2006 as assistant vice chancellor of Student Life Services. Janice “Jan” R. Jordan , 80, of Menomonie, passed away on Oct. 16, 2023, at Mayo Clinic, surrounded by family. Jan was proud of her 31-year career at UW-Stout, retiring as special assistant to the chancellor, chief of staff, in 2009.
