From the Associate Dean/School of Education Director

Greetings and welcome to the new school year! I hope the school year is off to a great start for you. The UW-Stout campus is vibrant with all the students here excited about learning. There are currently 67 student teachers placed in schools and September 16 the student teachers were on campus for their first fall seminar. During the seminar they learned about trauma-informed school practices from a school counseling faculty member and gained some insights about classroom management from a panel of four teacher education faculty. When asked how their student teaching is going, nearly all students indicated a 4 or 5, with 5 being outstanding. This is thanks to all the school districts who are hosting our students and providing them with a positive learning experience, and our exceptional faculty and staff who prepared them well. I trust that our 31 school counseling and school psychology students are having experiences equally as positive. During the summer we had the inaugural meeting of our School of Education Advisory Committee. The members represent small and large school districts in our region as well as a CESA. We discussed student placements, the new substitute teacher license pathway, offering dual credit courses in education, and opportunities to attract people into teaching as a career. Committee members shared valuable comments and ideas. There are still seats available on the committee so if you are interested in being a member, please let me know. Speaking of summer, two UW-Stout teacher education graduates received awards from the Wisconsin Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. You can read more about this in later in the newsletter along with highlights about new faculty and instructional academic staff who joined us in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, School Counseling, and School Psychology programs. I was also hired as the full-time Associate Dean/School of Education Director and am pleased to continue serving all our education programs. It has been a busy start to the school year, with a lot of activity and changes. Enjoy the newsletter and please contact me if you have any questions about what UW-Stout offers through the School of Education.
