Spring 2023 SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

T The signs of spring are all around us - the beautiful budding trees, spring flowers, and bird songs. At UW-Stout the signs of spring include the many senior capstone events the last few weeks of the semester, students in caps and gowns taking photos by the bell tower, the bells ringing after commencement ceremonies, and pickup trucks/trailers/ moving vans parked outside dorms and apartments as students move home or on to the next adventure in their career pathway. This group of graduates in particular had a college experience like no other group before them – those who came right out of high school in Fall 2019 had their college experience completely changed the next semester due to COVID. Most of our graduate students started and persisted during the pandemic. These graduates have learned to adapt, overcoming the challenges of isolation, navigating new ways to learn and work, and addressing mental health issues that may have arisen as a result. This year’s graduates are resilient and will bring all their experiences navigating change to the workplace. We are very proud of our graduates, including 61 in teacher licensure programs, 18 in School Counseling, and 13 in School Psychology. A number of these students received campus or professional association awards this spring in recognition of their scholarship and leadership; they are highlighted in this newsletter. From the Director This time of year, we also celebrate our faculty and staff who help all our students be successful, and those of you in our partner institutions who support our students as well. As the student speaker at our college’s commencement declared repeatedly, “I appreciate you.” Thank you for your support, encouragement, and

guidance in preparing future educators and leaders. You are part of their story, shaping them

along their pathway in life as well as their career.

Spring is a busy time in your schools, too, with many celebratory events, final concerts and/or plays, sporting events, and the list goes on. Enjoy those moments with your students, and consider how you can rejuvenate over the summer, both in body and in your professional practice. Perhaps you take a course on a topic you want to explore, as part of a certificate, degree program, or just to grow professionally. UW-Stout offers many online courses to serve educators with topics such as Universal Design for Learning, PBIS, poverty in schools, and add-on licensure endorsements (Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist) or certificates which can be part of a master’s degree: Instructional Design, Blended and Online Teaching & Training, Math Specialist, Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist, and Career & Technical Education Leadership. More information about the certificates, certifications, online professional development as well as our programs can be found on the School of Education website; a link is provided in the box to the right. Thank you for making a difference in students’ lives. Enjoy the rest of the school year and have a great summer!
