Winter 2023 SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Winter Update
T he beginning of a new year and new semester is a time for a fresh start, looking ahead at new possibilities. We are excited to welcome students back for spring semester, which for many will be their last as a UW-Stout student. And we begin looking ahead to who will become new students in the future. We are working hard to attract students into teaching and our teacher education programs in order to address the need expressed by school administrators who have called or emailed this year. One approach we are taking is by hosting a Teach Day on campus. Over 120 high school students from schools around the state joined us November 14 to learn more about teaching and our teacher education programs: Art Education, Early Childhood Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Marketing and Business Education, Math Education, Special Education, and Technology Education. Participants worked in small groups with the program in which they indicated their interest and were led through activities by UW-Stout education students, including a lesson plan about creating a public service announcement. The high school students did a great job developing creative PSAs that they presented at the end of the day! Students also met the program director and toured campus. Student feedback about the event was very positive: “I enjoyed being able to talk and collaborate with real professors and students” and “It was informative and definitely helped me be more confident in my decision to become a teacher.” Due to the positive response, we held another Teach Day on Monday, February 13. We look forward to seeing more young people who are interested in becoming teachers!
We also realize the need for school counselors and school psychologists. Our faculty in the school counseling program
are working on a grant proposal to
create opportunities for individuals in high need rural areas to become school counselors. And our school psychology program is optimistic they will have a full cohort starting in Fall 2023. Our faculty have engaged in their discipline areas through research and presentations that are listed on the next page. If the topics are of interest to you and you would like someone to present to your faculty and staff as part of a professional development day, please reach out and we will be happy to work with you. We also offer graduate programs and certificates that might serve the professional growth and development needs of your faculty and staff; they are listed at the end of the newsletter. We so appreciate those of you who host our education students for their clinical experiences. Your schools are the labs where they can apply what they learned in their programs and discover new learning through the process. It is also offers an opportunity for your faculty to grow and learn. We hope to explore more ways in which we can work together to support the professional growth and learning of your faculty and staff that lead to positive outcomes for your students.

This event provided a rich learning opportunity for students across campus as well as educator preparation students. Assistant Professor Terry Kohlmeier, Instructor Nicole Hajewski, and Director of Multicultural Student Services Mai Khou Xiong received a Chancellor’s Award that provided funding for the event.
