Joan E. Herwig, Ph.D. Early Childhood Education Endowed Scholarship Dr. Joan Herwig, a 1965 home economics education major, achieved her education in child development at Merrill Palmer Institute, Detroit, Mich. received a B.S. degree in home economics education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout received a M.S. degree in child development from Iowa State University, and received her Ph.D. from Purdue University in child development. She taught middle school in Port Huron, Mich. from 1965-1969 and was teacher/director in the first Head Start summer programs. Dr. Herwig received the UW-Stout Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985. She was the 1991-1992 Fulbright Scholar to India. She retired as Associate Professor Emeritus of human development and family studies, College of Human Sciences, from Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Academic highlights of her 32 years at Iowa State Include child development department chairperson, director of the Child Development Laboratory School located in the Palmer Human Sciences and Family Studies Building, serving in leadership roles in state, regional and national professional organizations throughout her career and receiving many recognitions. Maintaining lifelong connections with her former students continued to be a source of great pleasure. Her research focused on young children’s learning. She was a first-generation college graduate as the oldest of eight children. She was the great-granddaughter and eldest granddaughter of early rural Wisconsin one-room schoolteachers. This scholarship is for a junior early childhood education major with demonstrated financial need with preference given to a first-generation college student. The annual award is $1,900.
