WINTER GREETINGS!
Greetings from Interim Associate Dean of the School of Education

From Interim Associate Dean Deanna Schultz, Ph.D.
Honors and Awards
Here we are in the midst of winter after a busy first semester that brought both excitement and more challenges due to the COVID Omicron variant. It has caused me to pause and consider the work we do at UW-Stout to prepare future educators who are well prepared for whatever they may face in their position within a school district. With the increasing complexity and diversity in schools, our educator preparation students need more supported clinical experiences than ever. Whether preparing teachers, school counselors, or school psychologists, this statement by Linda Darling- Hammond suggests what we should consider for those experiences (italics are mine): “teaching that responds to human diversity and aims for cognitive flexibility requires a wide range of teaching strategies that are activated by sophisticated judgments grounded in disciplined experimentation, insightful interpretation of (often ambiguous) events, and continuous reflection ” (Darling-Hammond & Snyder, 2000, p. 524). Student teaching, internship, or practicum provide the capstone clinical experience in which students can practice these skills in a diverse, constantly changing learning environment. Those experiences are critical in their development as student teachers/counselors/school psychologists, providing them varied learning experiences while building their confidence as future professionals. We want our students to see themselves as educators long into the future! As we move through second semester, I appreciate those of you hosting our students and mentoring them as they continue to grow and learn. Providing quality mentors is essential in helping our students become the best possible educators they can be. And it provides a wonderful professional development opportunity for your experienced faculty and staff. We also have degree programs, certificate programs, and add-on licensure opportunities that could enhance the professional growth of your faculty and staff as well. You will find links at the end of this newsletter to web pages listing the programs and certificates we offer. I hope you have a safe spring semester and see excellent growth in your own students as well as college students in their clinical placements. Please contact me if you have any questions about our programs in the School of Education or our staff listed at the top of the next page who are responsible for clinical placements and endorsement for licensure.

School of Education faculty were selected to participate the Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars Program, a professional learning opportunity that supports faculty in exploring classroom-based research. This year’s focus is social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity. • Ann Oberding , Art Education – selected as a Wisconsin Teaching Fellow and will engage in a year- long research project. • Dr. Sharon Hansen , School Counseling – selected to attend Faculty College, a weeklong summer event with follow-up work in collaboration with colleagues on campus. EXCITING LEARNING EXPERIENCES HOSTED EVENTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Several events for high school students were hosted on campus by the Marketing & Business Education (MBE), Family & Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE), and Technology Education (TechEd) programs and students: • FBLA Leadership Lab, October 5, 2021 (hosted by MBE) • DECA District 1 Career Development Conference with competitive events, January 8, 2022 (hosted by MBE) • Teach Day for MBE, FCSE, TechEd, November 21, 2021: This was a new event for high school students interested in teaching within one of the career and technical education disciplines. Information about the event can be found online: www.uwstout.edu/about-us/news-center/teach- day-encourages-high-school-students-explore- teaching-career The School of Education, in partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin, hosted The Blanket Exercise on November 30, 2021 for education students enrolled in a multiculturalism course as well as other interested students and faculty. This participatory exercise helps participants understand the history of colonization in the United States and its impact on Indigenous peoples, while fostering truth, understanding, and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The exercise included a focus on northwestern Wisconsin and Menomonie territory, helping our future educators with the knowledge and understanding of the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin’s American Indian nations and tribal communities as identified in Act 31. In reflecting on the event, one student stated: It was incredible to get this information, as I will use it to strengthen my knowledge and help students by celebrating different cultures in my classroom and incorporating it into my curriculum.
