University of Wisconsin-Stout School of Education Update

Newsletter Highlights

Greetings from Interim Associate Dean of the School of Education

Program Information/ Updates

From Interim Associate Dean Deanna Schultz, Ph.D.

Spring is finally here, and with it come all the exciting end of year events to celebrate the success of our students. Here in the School of Education we are very proud of the 136 spring graduates from all our programs, including 65 of them in K12 teacher licensure programs, 14 school counselors and 11 school psychologists. Of those graduates in licensure programs, the majority already have full-time positions for next year. We also celebrate our outstanding faculty members who help all these students be successful and prepared as educators and educational leaders in our schools. Awards received by students and our faculty are highlighted later in this newsletter. This time of year we often hear from graduates, too, especially during Teacher Appreciation Week, about their experiences in one of our programs. This quote from a Marketing and Business Education alumnus, Kurtis Nelsen, reflects what we hear from other graduates about the quality of preparation they received in our programs: “Jumping into education this year of all years, after some time out of the classroom, was the biggest challenge of my life. But I never felt unprepared. I never felt like I didn’t know what to do and I never felt out of place. And it’s my belief that this is in large part due to the fantastic education provided to me at UW-Stout. Not a day goes by where I don’t think of something I learned at Stout.” It is so rewarding to hear these success stories which are possible due to all the faculty and Pre-K12 cooperating teachers, counselors, and school psychologists who support our students. As we look toward summer, it is a time for rejuvenation after a busy school year and also for professional development. UW-Stout offers many online education courses in the summer, either as part of degree programs or non-degree professional development options. These courses include topics such as poverty in schools, PBIS, flipped classrooms, creativity and innovation/Maker culture, and universal design for learning. Courses for several certificates are also available: Reading Teacher, Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist, and Instructional Design. Information on where to find these is located at the end of this newsletter. We hope to see some of your faculty in our courses this summer! Thank you to all who partnered with us this year to provide clinical experiences for our future educators. Your commitment and support for the profession is greatly appreciated. Enjoy the rest of the school year, and whatever your summer holds, may you find rest, have fun, and get recharged for next year.
